Elder Care is exhausting!

April 2nd, 2009 at 06:58 pm

Five phone calls and several hours on the phone long distance, but I think we at least have a plan. Even if it's just a plan to get more information.

A social worker will go out and assess Mom and her living situation. They can't force her to take care of herself, but at least they can evaluate things and give a different perspective.

I'll think about the costs after they provide the information. No use worrying about things before they happen.

Good news, well, a smile. I was panicking thinking I had two hours of prime time long distance charges. Then I remembered the new phone plan just kicked in, which includes unlimited long distance. Smile A silver lining among all the black smoke.

I'm glad to hear someone not part of the situation will go assess things for you! A weight off your mind for now.

Great thing to remember about the long distance! Yay!

So glad that some things are going to help you.

My family had teh responsibility for my grandmother. My uncle "took care of the house". it was only after she passed that I learned by accident that he was paying himself for each hour he spent "working" on the house fixing stuff. I approached him about all the "work" i did care taking for his mother and gave him a bill. I simply said either you pay mo mother, my sister and myself for the HOURS of work wach day or you repay the estate.

Low and behold he repaid the estate. To this day my mother does not know the full details she just knows there was 15k more in the accounts when they closed them together.

Amazing how some people can take advantage of others.

Be strong in your resolve to help the way you can. Be strong with your brother and talk to him, and your sister. I am thinking of all of you during this.

I wish you the best of luck. I have brought my mother into my home and taken care of her for almost a year. It is a trying experience but I have learned so much about my family members and even things about my mom that I never knew. Hard
    but worth it.

Wow, I'm amazed at how cOMMON the elder care problems are. I love my Mom and really want to support her.

Of course, she is reminding me that when I was four years old, I told her I would take care of her forever! Sigh, if only her short term memory was that good now Smile
