This weeks challenge - hair color at home

I don't have much grey hair, but the red is fading with age, and the blonde is well, a bit ashy. At least, I think so. I've been having my hair highlighted for 15 years. Somewhere under there used to be gorgeous red hair.

Last year's savings, I switched to all over color. The cost for my cut and color, along with DH's, went from $250 every six weeks, to $150 every six weeks.

Still...once again, Diva Jen, well, you started me on Target...

They have swatches of synthetic hair next to each box of color (and there are shelves FULL of products), so I can actually see the color of the treated hair.

Hmmm...the hair color DOES look MUCH better on the model on the box.

But, it does seem ridiculous to waste so much money on a simple vanity that I should be able to do myself, and better, right? Right?

ACK!!!

So, this week, sometime, I'm going to color my own hair, for the first time.

Like I needed the stress.

If I'm fluorescent, at least you can't see me in cyber space!

But the savings...over a year...without coupons, is still YIKES $120, over a year, that's...painful! (I'm skipping the hair cut this week out of fear, but DH still needs regular cuts, and we both have extremely wavy hair, so do it ourselves there is just not practical -- yet).

    Good luck! I colored my own hair for years, then started going to the salon when the grey started overtaking the dark brown. About five years ago I let it go natural, which is really cheap and easy! But you do have to have a lot of confidence to go all grey, it's so against the norm. But you're still far away from that! My advice -- cultivate a friend who will help you with the back!

    Some observations:
    I found out in school that some students will help you out with hair color for as little as $10.00
    Hate to say this but now the positive co-relation between hair dyes and lymphoma has been underscored by scientists. Hair dye should be treated as a carcinogen.
    Henna(Lawsonia alba) is a good substitute.
    I gave DH a haircut and he did not speak to me for three days. He wore a cap to the office. His barber made fun of him, threatened to charge $1.00 more.

    I've done my own hair for years too. I only highlight so I don't have to do it so often. I have ash blonde hair, highlight to nearly white to cover the grey. I do it all myself. My advise for a first timer is to read instructions first, next go through instructions without actually doing anything, finally just do it. Timing is the key in hair color. And yes get the hair cut after the color, dry ends can vary the color. Please let us know how it turned out.

    I have done my own for 35 years. Sometimes I miss a little spot in the back, but it has never turned out badly, good luck, you will save a lot of money!!

    My sister lives in Scottsdale, AZ and she finally brought me into her colorist when I was in town because I've been making a mess of my hair at home. Her colorist has her own line of color pigments that she will custom blend for you to take home! What a concept... It's a cool little hair studio and they were really nice. I've tried the color twice so far and I'm loving how my hair feels. She said there's no hydrogen peroxide in it so it won't make your hair dry and brassy. So far I think they're doing the custom blending in the studio, but once you've had them consult with you you can order online: daubyncolor.com. I think they'll send samples if you pay for the shipping? I know they're working on having the whole line of colors available for retail. The colors are more expensive than the store brands - I paid $20 - but you don't have to use it all at once if you just need to do small touch ups - I do my temples every 2 to 3 weeks. Anyway, thought this might help.
